Dr. Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr. died on August 28, 2016.

CBT pioneer, Dr. Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr. He studied with Dr. Albert Ellis in the 1960s and then went on to develop his own approach to CBT, Rational Behavior Therapy. Maultsby's systematic approach strongly emphasized self-help. He was the first to assign reading assignments.

Being a physician, Maultsby based RBT on psychoneurophysiology. Its development was also heavily influenced by learning theory. He introduced the concept of "thought shorthand" with "attitudes," although others seemed to receive the credit with their concept of the "automatic thought."

Maultsby was the author of several books, including Rational Behavior Therapy, You and Your Emotions, Help Yourself to Happiness, and Coping Better .. Anytime, Anywhere.
